secretary janet napolitano will be sitting in as they have in many of the meetings that vice president biden had been holding along the way. also representatives from the major city's chiefs and major sheriff's associations. s the conversations continue as congress gets ready to start weighing the white house's recommendations for gun control measures and members of both chambers have introduced legislation to ban assault weapons and put limitations on high-capacity magazines. also, the senate judiciary committee is set to hold its first hearings on the measures on wednesday. president obama also welcoming the miami heat to the white house today to congratulate them on their 2012 nba championship. had to give a little plug for the home team there. and if why haven't we done this already news, the senate's going to vote to approve more than $50 billion in aid to victims of super storm sandy. tens of thousands of families still displaced or lack the proper heat to deal with the cold. you may remember the senate did approve the full $60 billion relief package back in december but then the house took recess

lbj, many people say he was the last great liberal. but i guess -- as long as we blame him for stuff that's great. i don't know what to say. were you appalled by what happened in virginia last week? >> yes absolutely. they did it while the president was being inaugurated. it was the only time that they could have a 20-19 vote. >> john: exactly. they did it because of a civil rights veteran in the virginia legislature who went to d.c. anyone in the media address this? even when the republican governor of the state said it was wrong, how were they able to do this on martin luther king day? itit was a holiday. weren't they closed? >> there hasn't been any conversation about how procedurally they were able to get that done. >> john: many think it wasn't legal. it will be challenged in the courts. it might be because virginia doesn't take dr. king's birthday holiday seriously. i don't know if you know this but i spent a lot of time there. my mom's from virginia. i have a lot of family there. >> i'm from virginia.

>> you know it's not martin luther king. it is jackson -- they honor two confederate generals and this other fella. >> wow. cognitive dissidence. >> some republicans are backing away from it. >> and legislation hasn't passed on holidays before. there is no law saying you can't pass legislation on holidays. >> john: it is shady. to me, it seems like -- >> it is totally shady. >> john: but on a federal holiday they're able to do that? i'm slow on these things but it was really, really disgusting. i don't think it is going to hold up in court. this is the problem facing our republican friends. we had a republican on hold who i understand dropped. i'm sorry he did because i think the thing is they're not winning elections. when they're not winning elections, what are they going to do? they're either going to try to reach out to voters by having more progressive policies or they're going to try to cheat. it looks like they're going hard for the cheating.

she would have expanded her brand in a way that fox news and a canceled reality show never could have done it. >> that's what i said in the book. if she wants to keep the sarah palin brand or sarah-co going she's got to run for president because otherwise who cares? she wasn't on the national stage long enough and frankly, with you know fox's dying audience, all of the shut-ins and elderly that are watching them, that of course she was going to fade. >> john: i think you're right. >> right now she is essentially a facebook celebrity. >> john: even "the new york times" rather pointedly mentioned even though she left fox, she was still sending out messages on facebook. >> basically she's the tela tequila of punditry. >> right now she's an inarticulate tree falling in the forest.

[ laughter ] >> john: what do you think she can contribute rude? we're not going to ever see her run for national office again? >> no. we're never really going to see her anymore. she is going to be a fringe leader. the sad part is it will be increasingly dwindling and i think at some point we'll see her on "dancing with the stars." >> john: i think you're right. when she -- i used to joke she will be the first major party ticket candidate to one day host a cosmetics infomercial but now i think she's one step closer. as her fan base dwindles, do you think, rude, it will become ever more right wing? for her to stay relevant, she'll have to go more and more to the right to have a very loud minority following her? >> i think so. she had inklings of that. the way she threw around the word "socialist," she was trying to appeal to a far right group of people that are just simply waiting for her dog whistle. >> john: i think you're right. it is sad because she could have

offered something. she wasn't the worst governor alaska ever had. she did raise taxes and regulate the oil companies. i think she could have been interesting if she decided to be. it looks like she wanted to be a celebrity. >> that's the thing. that was the calculation and even accepting the v.p. spot with mccain was okay, what is this going to do for sarah. it wasn't what is this going to do for the country or alaska. it made alaska into something of a laughingstock for electing her when, you're right she actually -- i threw out there she wasn't an effective governor. she wasn't a good governor but she actually did do some things like you said, she did raise taxes which is something that everybody always forgot about when she was running and talking about you know, the taxes being too high. >> so she's the thinking man's michele bachmann. >> oh, wow! that's painful. >> that made my brain hurt. >> that creates some kind of vortex in space and time.

>> john: i think we've given her more time than she deserves. i will tell everyone that to read rude's book. he has hilarious commentary on her. the ten nastiest thing sarah palin said in her three years on fox. calling for a chick-fil-a boycott has a chilling effect on our first amendment rights. the stuff she says -- >> those are our first amendment rights. >> john: exactly. stimulus didn't stimulate anything. everything she's been wrong about on fox news. >> speak of people being wrong i was in pennsylvania last week. i drove through and i saw a sign that said "if you're gonna vote for a socialist get out of my damn country." i thought you don't understand what voting is about, do you? >> john: if you don't like socialism, you don't ever say anything nice about your libraries, roads streetlights or army. >> right. >> john: i want to move closer to home and talk about great column you wrote rude.

something that kind of shocked me in the great state of tennessee with the courthouse. i thought they couldn't really top fighting the ten commandment ins courthouses. having a place you put up thou shalt not kill is pretty funny. in cookeville, tennessee? >> in cookeville, tennessee they decided that a pastor there, a southern baptist pastor decided that what was missing from the putnam county courthouse were the words "in god we trust." okay, fine. it is on the money. it is essentially the model of the united states. because eisenhower got that passed in 1956. >> john: it is not the conservative point of view. the conservative point of view would be a separation of church and state as the founders intended. 18th century point of view is putting in god we trust in everything. >> they raised money to put "in

as livestock and pets. i mean really. flying the flag of an enemy nation is the best way to show how patriotic you are. >> that would be great. if you put the rising sun next to it, you know. let's put it all up there. >> john: rude, shifting gears. i want to get your thoughts on the benghazi hearings last week. i know you've written about it. for me, watching it, it was like watching the benghazi hearings and how the right wing media covered secretary clinton afterwards. it was like come for the hypocrisy, stay for the misogyny. for rand paul and these guys being complete hypocrites compared to how bush reacted after a terrorist attack and how they're reacting now to see sean hannity saying hillary unglued. this cover of the "new york post" implying she drives bill clinton into other women's arms. the sexism was insane. out how you feel -- how did you feel about watching it? >> at least they weren't talking about her bangs.

[ laughter ] but no, i felt the same way. i thought wow especially when she had that moment of getting angry and upset i thought they're just going to turn that into my god isn't she so pitchy and of course, we don't want a woman to behave like this. whereas, you know, and then they accused her of being disingenuous when she was giving her opening statement she choked up, talking about the families of the people who had died. so what do you want? what does she have to do to demonstrate she has real emotions that matter? that don't matter in relations to how they make the men feel, how they matter as a human being. and also, in response to what was a kind of -- you know, for lack of a better word, the bullying questions you know, that they kept asking the same thing even though that she

simply didn't have an answer or that it was just crap they were making up like rand paul with the turkey thing. turkey? what the hell are you talking about? >> john: in fairness to the secretary, she can handle tough questions. it would have been nice if republicans asked tough questions when people were killed in our embassies under president bush. it was never a priority for them back then. likewise to see about how -- when george bush -- they're saying barack obama didn't exact act quickly enough. you know, remember when george bush was sitting numbly in a classroom. as we were under attack and they were acting like that's like john wayne free basing a low testosterone drug? you know, these guys have the attention span of the guy from memento. >> i loved -- the ultimate projection was when they were talking about to hillary like you had a memo. or an e-mail that said something about that we might get attacked.

first create a tough but fair path to citizenship for illegal immigrants already here. contingent on meeting border security metrics. changes the system in a way that helps our economy. set up a verification program and overhaul the system for letting future workers into the united states. the goal is to have legislation drafted by the end of march. the president's going to travel to vegas tomorrow and that is where he will speak publicly on his plans to move immigration reform and make that an immediate priority. of course, he's also moving on gun violence at the same time. so he's going to have to work at those paths simultaneously. we can attribute the new republican willingness to go along with republican reform to the republicans losing seven out of ten hispanic votes in november. mccain and company have some selling to do. they need to convince their colleagues their plans don't amount to amnesty. the bipartisan agreement does intentionally include some provisions defined to help that cause. for example, illegal immigrants

would have to pay back taxes and fines and have to wait in line behind those who are pursuing a path legally and are still waiting. also, certain border security measures that have to be implemented and those parameters met before any of the 11 million here illegally get the chance to pursue citizenship. we're back with more show after the break. stay with us. going to do the young turks. i think the number one thing that viewers like about the young turks is that we're honest. they know that i'm not bs'ing them with some hidden agenda, actually supporting one party or the other. when the democrats are wrong, they know that i'm going to be the first one to call them out. they can question whether i'm right, but i think that the audience gets that this guy, to the best of his ability, is trying to look out for us.

>> eric boehlert. ♪ hurt so good ♪ >> stephanie: let's dive into the right-wing world. >> i don't know ha that means. >> stephanie: eric boehlert who we love. >> good morning eric boehlert. >> good morning. >> good morning. >> john: welcome to the steph show eric. part of my assault to interview you on as many chances as possible. it is great to have you here. i know you're as broken up about losing sarah palin from the greta van susteren show. >> it is definitely an end of an era. i think most people expected she wouldn't be back but you know, it's interesting. if you go back to -- she was hired january has been an interesting month. january '09, glenn beck's show debuted. the week of obama's inauguration. >> john: january '09 was the week that o'reilly and hannity were given four-year deals by fox. >> that's right. they were re-upping january of

2010. sarah palin came aboard fox with a reportedly million dollar a year contract to be a pundit. now here we are in january of '13, obama's re-elected easily, celebrating sort of basking in the glow of his second inauguration. and the same week, sarah palin and fox break up after reportedly fox offered her next to nothing to stay and she decided to leave. 2010, it looked like beck and palin and fox with the tea party, they really were going to sort of change the face of american politics. >> john: they did. >> they did temporarily. >> john: they marginalized the whole brand. >> fast forward three years. beck is gone. obama wins easily and now palin's gone. the whole thing sort of imploded as it had to because it was so

reckless and it was so sort of radically hateful. you know, beck with his conspiracies and palin about her nonstop sense of victimization and things like that. so it's worth noting this is soft the end of an era. fox itself, still very much lost to conspiracies. still very, very much loss in a sense of self-pity particularly with obama's inauguration. but it's not what roger ailes thought he was going to build. that's not what they have anymore. >> john: do you think -- this is my last question about palin. i want to move on to fox news and their outrage model but do you think that ails did this to give pail an out so she could say she quit? was it an insult to of oar her so little money or was he doing her a favor? >> i think it was an insult. my guess is they felt like they had to offer something. there was some negotiation you know. it sounds like she had been

making a million. they offered her maybe a tenth of that. it would have been insulting. if she had taken it, of course, the way fox news works they play hardball, that would have leaked. everyone would have -- she came back for a tenth or whatever. it would have been in that business. would have been kind of humiliating. the point of no return for her was the blood libel -- january of '11. she seemed to have no idea what blood libel meant. the anti-semitic implications of it. she refused to apologize. that was the end of her pundit career. >> john: after having a rifle scope on gabby gifford's district. you know what jacki schechner pointed out fox apparently paid sarah palin, if you factor out by the word, how much did she make? >> it was $15 per word. it is from the university of

minnesota humphrey school of public affairs. smart politics blog. they figured out she spoke -- more than 189,000 words over 50 appearances. it comes out to $1.85 per word. it doesn't say how many coherent words. >> john: does this mean some unpaid intern had to pay how many words she said? >> i'm not sure how many of those were real words. >> john: do contractions count as two words? >> if you looked at the word count from 2012, she was on so infrequently. she was probably making $50 a word compared to 2010, 2011. >> hannity and van susteren interviewed her 55 times for 3/4 of her appearances over the last 36 months. >> poor intern! oh, my god. >> john: i think eric, it augers for the future of fox news. your latest piece is entitled are conservatives rethinking the

fox news outrage model. you make a good point that maybe, just maybe some of our republican brothers and sisters are sick about this all hissy fit, all propaganda model going on through fox. >> eric erickson who is fairly prominent conservative commentator at cnn, i believe one of the founders writes over at red state he wrote a piece last week saying you know, basically, let's drop this phony outrage thing. he did mention fox but it was obvious -- he was talking about outrage pimps on the left and the right. the entire column are about what he claims are these conservative town cryers on the right. he makes very good points. it does nothing to build the movement. it doesn't get anyone elected. it turns people off. it's awful to listen to. and -- >> john: do you really think it doesn't get anyone elected? couldn't you say the reason why the republicans did as well as they did in 2010 was that outrage machine got people organized and noblized?

>> i think it's different now. i think that was erickson's point was in 2010, we did something. we got out o there. we knocked on doors. we held rallies. we created this movement, yes it imploded. but we created this thing where if now, all of the grassroots, all of the action is gone and all that's left is this just sort of phony outrage. i can't believe fill in the blank said fill in the blank. that's all that's left is the tea party has sort of crumbled. his point was we have no infrastructure. no one's doing anything. fox news, you know, is just complaining about how that democrat was elected and now he wants to govern as a democrat. that doesn't really do anything. >> john: exactly. it seems like that's all we've heard since the state of the union. they're saying obama come mean anything. friends on the right said obama meant everything he said. i imagine it is somewhere in the middle. >> it is. the phony outrage and just sort

of being -- taking umbrage to everything -- turn on fox news this morning. what's the phony outrage? the clinton/obama interview last night. you know. and as we were talking inauguration day you know, it was only a matter -- since obama was the centerpiece of attention on monday, everyone woke up knowing it was only a matter of time before the right wing media and fox would find something to freak out about and it took about six minutes into his address before they all figured out what it was. oh he's too liberal. this is too partisan. it was inevitable. the only question is what's the fake imaginary slate going to be today and what's it going to be tomorrow and the day after that? again, i think erickson, he doesn't work for fox. he doesn't really do that at cnn so he can afford to sort of call it out. but i think the point is it doesn't get anyone elected and i

company and get them. i'm hosting "viewpoint" now and i'm thrilled to welcome back on the show, eric boehlert of media matters. before we get to right-wing world, i want to ask you about tucker carlson's tweet he sent out about letting women serve in active duty combat. did you have any thoughts on that? >> yeah. he had two bizarre ones. one, women in violence act serving in the military. one, women being attacked by a partner is the same as volunteering to serve your country. and the second was equating feminism with what was it, women having the opportunity to get their limbs blown off. >> stephanie: tucker carlson noted anti-war activist. >> noted front line veteran. now lecturing the likes of tammy duckworth about what it's like to serve in the military. you know, it's just -- right

wing has lost immigration, gay rights women serving in the military. it is all slipping away from them. and they're left with sort of these angry sort of hollow retards. >> john: so tired of the sexism. it has been so brought out of focus over the response of allowing women to serve. which again is a recommendation that came from the joint chiefs of staff. this was not imposed on them by any civilians in the pentagon or the white house. the joint chiefs recommended it because women are already in combat. let's start paying the ones who are in combat, what they deserve >> it is not like every woman in the military will be in combat. you've got to earn it. there's going to be tests. i mean come on, they're not just going to send people out there who aren't qualified. we don't have time to talk about hillary's testimony on the hill last week. just the floodgates of right wing misogyny that that opened up. preview of what's to come, i think. >> john: i think you're right

eric. they had eight years of hating her as first lady. 12 years of loving her as a senator and secretary of state and now they're looking at 2016, they're going to hate her all over again to hurt her so chris christie, who they also hate, can become president. one more thing about the women in combat. there's so many men in the military who aren't fit for combat. there were so many women who are ready for combat and haven't been allowed to serve. i want to go to lieutenant colonel boykin will track number 12, the guy who came out a few years ago and said he knew we would win the war on terror because we worship a real god and they worship the false god. never mind the fact that both religions agree it is the same god. here's jerry boykin on fox news on sunday. >> mixing the genders in those combat units where there is no privacy, where they're out on extended operations and there's no opportunity for people to have any privacy whatsoever. i certainly don't want to be in

that environment with a female because it's degrading and human igiating enough to have -- humiliating enough to do your personal hygiene and the normal functions among your teammates. >> john: eric, is he saying we can send them to kill people and be killed and be shot at but it must be degrading if someone sees my wee-wee? >> yeah. the idea that this hasn't been discussed within the pentagon for at least a decade. hasn't been signed off by all of the senior officials and things like that. i mean what do these people think? obama called up the generals and said make this happen? for someone like boykin who's been in the military to pretend he has no idea, you know, how decisions are made in the military, it is kind of funny. >> john: exactly. i think he's auditioning for a new job that's opened up at box. let's go to rush limbaugh, the bloated gasbag himself talking about women in the military. this is rush limbaugh trying not to be sexist.

barack talking about how in the campaign, it was kind of rough during the primary season because they both agreed on so many things. they didn't know how to fight each other. >> right. we got -- in on "the stephanie miller show," we got in quite a few fights with hillary supporters because stephanie was a big time obama supporter. i kind of felt like it tore the party apart a little bit. >> john: a little bit. ultimately, it made the party stronger. >> ultimately, it did. >> john: let's listen to secretary clinton on cut two from last night on "60 minutes" with steve croft. >> in politics and in democracy sometimes you win elections. sometimes you lose elections. and i worked very hard but i lost. and then president obama asked me to be secretary of state. i said yes. and why did he ask me and why did i say yes? because we both love our country. >> john: very well put! the president had this to say cut one, about his time working. >> obama: i want the country to appreciate just what an extraordinary role she's played during the course of my

administration and a lot of the success we've had internationally have been because of her hard work. >> i'm sorry. i have to disagree with patricia. that sounded like hillary's kickoff for 2016. >> john: i put this out to the brilliant folks in steph land. why do they do this? the president called "60 minutes" and wanted to do this joint interview. something they've never done before. why was it done? was it just a love letter thanking hillary clinton for her service? that's great. we have never seen this done for any cabinet member by a president. any theories? >> hmm. it was a kickoff. >> john: certainly seems that way. >> that's the only thing i can think of. jim? you seem like you're thinking about it. >> i can't see any other reason for it. yeah. >> john: it seems like it was very diplomatic. i have no doubt he's sincere about thanking her for her service to the nation and his administration. but at the same time it looks like they had a very strategic

partnership. and that hillary clinton if she wants to be president in 2016, the job is hers for the taking. i think that's great and it is nice to see how happy that makes our democratic friends. i do think it would be worthwhile for democratic friends to think about what kind of president they're looking for rather than personalities because while i admire hillary clinton very much and if she's the nominee i'll vote for her i would like to see someone a bit more progressive challenge her for the nomination. i think that would be good for the party. >> i agree. >> john: we've had lots of nice, moderate presidents. a liberal democrat wouldn't be the worst experiment to try. i love the president's speech. as lee camp said on "viewpoint" last week, look at the appointments. and looking at the appointments, you know, he's still -- barack obama himself said in the '70s, he would be called a moderate republican which is all -- that's not slamming the president. that's who he is. but it is a way of slamming our republicans who keep calling this radical socialist. if that's ad are cal socialist

let's get bernie sanders. >> any suggestions on who could be a liberal person to run? >> john: i would -- there's very few politicians i would campaign door-to-door for but elizabeth warren is one of them. i look forward to seeing what the next four years bring. i would be thrilled if she was the president of my country. who knows. jerry brown might decide he's going to go for it. he seems to run every other decade. >> he might be a little old now. >> john: a little old. that old guy looks really good in california right now. balanced the budget. that old guy managed to get the voters to vote for their own tax increase. now, it has been a blot of austerity for the voters of california. they'll have surpluses. i'm a real fiscal conservative. i did it. >> i have to say, i was a little nervous when jerry brown became governor. >> john: yeah? did you vote for him? >> well, i mean -- it was either him or the republican who was running. i don't think i voted for him in

"60 minutes" obviously airs on cbs so she's got that one covered already. in other news, a handful of

groups are organizing to try to stop former senator chuck hagel from becoming our next secretary of defense. a new conservative group with anonymous donors called americans for a strong defense is running ads urging five democrats to vote against confirming hagel. another is called use your mandate. it is also new. it also has anonymous donors. it claims to be a liberal gay rights groups but buys its ad time through a republican firm. it has no web site and no physical address. it is, however using ads and mailers to call hagel anti-gay, anti-woman and anti-israel. this is part of a larger story in "the new york times" reporting at least five other groups are engaged in trying to block the president's choice. and the increase emergence of anonymous dollars and shady front groups is likely a result of citizens united. that 2010 decision that opened the floodgates to allow interested parties to inject endless outside money into our political campaign. >> i hate citizens united. >> me, too.

toward the upper echelon of the executive branch. and i think that fuels the flames. you know, i don't think what you guys are doing is -- you know, the republican way of gathering be the wagons in a circle, that kind of a thing. >> is it is possible for democrats to do that. >> caller: not spending as much time on the negative stuff fueling, you know, what is -- most of the time, just conjecture anyway. >> john: sometimes it is more than conjecture. in the case of harry reid, it is a lot of promises he's been making to the base not the liberals but the democrats in general about the need for filibuster reform, about how he wouldn't do what he did before again. no hand shake agreements with mitch mcconnell. the young senators who wanted to have reform were right, he was wrong. he was specific. then he, of course, voted to have a recess on the first day of the senate session last week.

so it would last a few more days which i don't understand harry reid, if you're afraid of bullies, last thing you want is more recess. then he went ahead and he caved anyway. he completely caved anyway. >> caller: absolutely. >> john: and now a lot of liberals get frustrated when democrats have moderate improvements that they call reform. if there's one -- >> caller: i think our job now is going to be to try and pick everybody back up again. because i think that -- i don't think there's much of a positive spin on this. the only excuse i've heard politicians give is well, what happens if we're in the minority? but that doesn't matter because we don't filibuster. it doesn't -- >> john: democrats filibuster under george bush. we don't do it to the obnoxious degree where we completely shut the country down. i think we've learned a valuable lesson from the tee party. the tea party has taught a lot of liberals that purity tests for the sake of purity tests

alone will kill your party. for everyone who's mad at obama for not being more to the left, i understand but look at the side of what the tea party has done in terms of leading this party off a cliff. getting the tea party candidates in primaries who are unelectable. and i would love to see dennis kucinich as president but i know if he got the nomination, he would be flattened. we have to have this compromise. progress takes time. >> caller: what you just said to me is exactly what happened in 2010 when we -- various democratic voters just had a problem with various things. >> john: i'm going to disagree with you. i don't blame democratic voters -- i don't blame progressive discontent with the president for 2010. i blame a couple of things. number one people not showing up to vote. we showed up. we showed up to vote in 2010. a lot of democrats didn't. the ones who criticize the president still came out to vote. you have to keep in mind the historical reality that generally, unless a 9-11

everybody who comes down on that side of the debate is. >> right. that everybody can make their own decision. >> john: exactly. >> it is absolutely not an easy decision. i don't know anyone who's come to it lightly. i think it is incredibly emotional for the women involved. >> and traumatic. >> and partners involved. there are lingering effects. i think having to go through the entire process and make the decision and then go through with it is something that lingers. i think that you absolutely have to make that distinction. if you don't then you're trivializing what the entire debate is about to begin with. because i don't think anybody says i would like to have an abortion -- let's go out on a tuesday and have an abortion. it doesn't happen. >> i had two this morning. >> why not. >> hang on, jim. if men could get pregnant, locker room douchebags would be bragging over who has the most. >> you have to make that distinction. you can't say you're pro abortion and pro-life. no. >> john: i said it on the show

more compromising than the other side. >> john: i completely agree. while i respect the incremental progress we made, i'm ready for real reform, not incremental progress. >> what happens when you stand your ground and you have a majority in the senate and you have a mandate from the american people to make the changes you campaigned on. where is the harm in pushing a little bit harder? joan this is the -- >> john: this is the problem people had with the public option. they couldn't do it because it would require a reconciliation vote. >> why not? joan why not indeed. then what do they do with the affordable care act? they went ahead and used the reconciliation anyway. the thing they said they wanted to avoid they went ahead and did it. if you're going to do it, you could have given us a public option. our economy would be much stronger. every cbo estimate has shown while the affordable care act will shave over $100 billion off the deficit, it would have been a lot more with the public option. >> it would be the cost control we need in place. there's no way you're going to control the skyrocketing costs of health insurance without

introducing some sort of provision into this healthcare exchange that limits costs. >> john: jacki speaks the truth. i'll go one step beyond it. what is sane about making employers pay for their employee's healthcare? how is that pro capitalism? all of our allies have single payer. that's socialism we're afraid of? show me a capitalist ally who doesn't have it? when we're doing that, you'll see we'll no longer have a country where the leading cause of bankruptcy is inability to pay healthcare costs. we're going broke over this. if you really were afraid of -- if you're really afraid of the competition of public option or cheaper canadian drugs, then you ain't a capitalist, my friend. >> that's the crazy part. they argue they can't compete with the public option and at the same time they were arguing the public option was going to be crap and nobody wanted it. it is one or the other. really horrible and nobody's going to use it or if would be so unbelievably competitive that health companies can't compete with it.

democrats didn't midge it properly and -- didn't message it properly and members of congress didn't have the right talking points to fight back against the tea party uprisings in august when we had that giant coup out in public because people didn't know what it was and what they were talking about. we didn't get out in front of the public option messaging as strongly as we should have and could have. >> john: the phrase public option. they call it citizens choice, you would have gotten republicans on our side. >> the naming was complicated. i was a really big part of what we call it and how we call it. you can't call it a government plan. you can't call it government option. >> john: the citizens choice. saying that a public option would hurt public healthcare is like saying community college hurts the ivy league. the post office has destroyed u.p.s. and fedex. it doesn't work that way. >> no. really good example of that kind of competition. >> i was going to say -- >> we'll let jim get a word in. >> why would we do that? >> look at all of the countries who have opted nor the american system of healthcare.

immigration bill. >> john: please. >> okay. because i think we need to look at all of the provisions because i question if they're going to increase the availability by companies of hb1 visas for workers because some of these companies are notorious for hiring and bringing over technology workers. because they work for a lot cheaper than the u.s. technology workers. because i read articles. there really is not a shortage of technology workers in the u.s. but there is a shortage of u.s. technology workers who are willing to work for less. be. >> okay. >> caller: so i think we need to look at this bill carefully because there may be that kind of provision in there. >> john: that's a very good point. thank you for the call. i don't think you're ever going to see real immigration reform

11 million people living in this country in the shadows in an illegal status. >> john: he would know because he lives in a state where like many other southwestern states, undocumented workers being exploited props up the whole economy. >> absolutely. i used to live there. i lived in arizona for 13 years. >> john: you're so arizona. i can see that. senator dick durbin had ideas on the plan that might become a plan that might become a concept. >> we're committed to a comprehensive approach to finally in this country get an immigration law we can live with. >> john: we don't know if this will lead to real reform or not. it gives republicans and democrats something new to fight about on the airwaves for the next week. >> it is an opening to a conversation. it is interesting to me that we can't discount the fact the only reason why republicans are coming to the table is because they lost the hispanic vote in the last election. >> john: you're right. you can't become president without 670% of the -- without 60% of the latino vote.
